What Does Meditation Feel Like? Meditation is gaining popularity recently. Some people are selling it as the new miracle cure to happiness. While it is true meditation can make you happier, it’s not the whole truth.

I wanted to write this article to give you a holistic understanding of how meditation can really make you feel.

The longer and deeper you go into meditation practice, the more intensely you feel. Meditating can feel like wave of inner peace and relaxation. You can feel more connected to the people and world around you. There are days when you can feel frustrated by your meditation. Other times your underlining emotions can bubble to the surface and you feel them with great intensity. The more consistently you meditate, the stronger your ability will be to navigate and observe what you feel.

When you start to meditate it’s important you understand the different ways meditation may make you feels.

Some newbies believe meditation will make them feel instantly relaxed in only a couple of sessions.

Why can this thinking set you up to fail?

Like any goal you set out to achieve, there’s always going to be a learning curve.

You need to be careful not to set your expectations to only experience positive feelings. As the moment things get hard or confronting, meditation practice can get thrown into the too hard basket!

What’s the Secret?

The key here is to know, that there will be times when you will feel frustrated, overwhelmed and may have to deal with underlining emotions that surface.

These positive and negative emotions are part of meditation.

When you learn a course like meditation for beginners, it teaches you how to observe and allow these feelings to move through you without attachment or judgment.

So what should you do when feeling surface?

Think of it like this!

Feelings are like the moving scenery you experience as you drive your car on a exciting road trip. You don’t need to grab every flower, tree branch or sign post to examine under a microscope. You just sit back and observe all the cool and interesting things flow by you.

Treat your meditation the same way let your sensations and feelings flow by while you sit and observe.

The intensity of feelings will range differently for beginners to experienced meditators.

Some may say they feel nothing or very little, while others may experience their meditation intensely!

Remember what you feel during meditation will always be personal and truly unique to you.

The Good – The Positive Feelings

Relaxation

You feel your tight and stressed muscles begin to let go of tension. You body starts to feel a sensation of sinking into the furniture and floor. You feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. This can feel like relief or a surge of energy through your body. The worries of your mind feel like they’ve been turned down from level ten to level one. Your breathing deepens and you feel a wave of peace and tranquility.

Clarity

You feel like a space is expanding and clearing in your mind. This can feel like a tornado of chaotic thoughts turns into a peaceful sunny meadow.  You can see a detailed map of your life in high resolution. You feel a sense of trust inside yourself and feel like you are able to navigate a clear path towards your goals. You see a more balanced view of decisions you need to make. People and situations in your life begin to reveal themselves to you in a whole new light. You feel of confidence in the journey ahead.

Compassion

When you meditate regularly you begin to feel compassion for other people. Filling as a you understand the situation and can empathize with them on a deeper level. This can make you feel more connected with world around you. You start to become aware of the energy that runs through all of us, you feel connected to this energy at a deeper level. You feel empathy with people and can understand their situations from a new perspective. This can make you feel more patient, accepting and less likely to judge someone if they do something wrong.

You feel like you have an internal focus, which allows you keep your feet sure and steady. You feel physically, mentally and emotionally balanced.

You feel gratitude for what you have in your life right now. You feel thankful for possessions, people and states of mind. You feel lucky for the smallest things and have in your life. You state to feel a sense of completeness for all you have. The feeling of gratitude heightens and ignites the feeling of abundance. You start to feel like you have everything you need right now in the present moments.

Loving and Kind

You start to feel the presence of love in your life. Your heart soften and being to open to let in the healing vibration of love. You feel closer to friend and family and open a new space for them in your life. Trivial problem melt away and you free yourself from the shackle of conditional love. You cherish the people closest to you

Present

You feel more in the present moment. Thoughts that run wild in your mind, start to fade into the background. You feel the sensations of your body (sight, sound smell, taste and touch) come alive. You feel connected and in sync with friends and family. You can really enjoy personal interaction to the fullest. Your mind becomes draw to the present, issue from the past and worries about the future begin to shrink in importance. With you mind absorbing more of the present moment, you feel more energized throughout your day.

Positive

You feel happier, joyful and excited. You feel like you are gliding on a good vibe all day. Troubles in your day are momentary and you recover quickly to a place of super chill. It’s like the storm clouds have lifted and you are not being weighted down anymore. You start achieving more, doing more and enjoying your work. Interaction with friends, family and co-workers flow and you feel like you have more patience. There is a sense of lightness in your body, this allows you to move with ease and more energy.

Physical Sensations

You can sometimes feel good sensations in your body. These Sensations can be real or imagined. As you meditate they can grow and shrink intensity.

Energy

You feel energy run through different parts of your body. You can feel light faintly or with powerful intensity. This can run through you like a wave of energy, a pulse, a lighting surge or a steady beat. You may feel the energy with your breathing or with a guided visualization. The energy can fill you up or buss like an electrical current. You feel charged and energize as this energy build and runs through you.

Heavy

You feel like you are sinking or melting into the floor and furniture. Muscles in your body loosen and relax. Your body starts to feel a heavy sensation. Objects you’re a sitting or lying on can start to feel like squishy flexible foam, wet sand or soft putty. The weight of your body begins to sink into this malleable surface. As you sink into the surface, you feel a wave of total relaxation flood through your body.

Floating

You feel like you are been lifted into the air from where you sitting or lying. Your body feels weightless and relaxed. You feel as if your body is filled worth helium. Your worried melt as you enjoy the pleasure of riding on air. Tension in your body lets go and muscles feel like feather floating gently. Your feel like it is pulling and rising off the surface of the earth.

Temperature

You feel the sensation of temperature changes through your body. This sensation can be hot or a cool. These shifts may cause you to feel like sweating or gooses bumps on the skin. You feel these sensations through your whole body or in specific locations like your hands. These temperature shifts can change in intensity enduring as your meditate. They can feel comforting and enjoyable warming and cooling tire and stressed muscles.

Space

You feel your internal space grow inside your mind and body. You feel more room to move and breath. You feel like you have found a secret door inside your mind that leads to new beautiful big interesting rooms.
